I. The Living
a) Seers:
Able to see the dead, though whether or not they actually realize that’s what they’re seeing varies from person to person. Belief or lack of belief in the existence of ghosts can contribute to the frequency that a seer encounters them. The ability to actually communicate with ghosts is subjective to the character; most inexperienced Seers can only see, but over time they might be able to communicate with them, though it may not be verbal (e.g. telepathic communication either while awake or asleep, or clairsentience). With practice and experience, a Seer can evolve into a medium over time. All Mediums are Seers, but not all Seers are capable of becoming Mediums.
b) Mediums:
Some say that mediums are able to live and act in multiple dimensions simultaneously. They can interact with most ghosts as if they were people in the world of the living. If a spirit is “trapped” in the world of the living because of unfinished business, a Medium can sometimes aid them in the process of crossing over.
c) Discords:
Also known as nonbelievers. Discords are either completely unaware or extremely against/skeptical of the existence of ghosts. The reason for their lack of belief is to be determined by the creator of the character. Experiences can lead to some belief and the Discord can become a Seer, but it’s very rare that a Seer who was once a Discord will ever become a Medium.
II. The Dead
a) Specters:
Ghosts that are aware of their state. In other words, they know they’re dead. They may not remember how they died or why they’re still in the world of the living, but since they know that they are different they can usually use their exclusive abilities to more of an advantage. Most of the time, Specters are intelligent entities, meaning they have some grasp on what is going on and can communicate well with Mediums and some Seers.
b) Shades:
Poor souls who have no idea that they’re dead. Sometimes they act exactly how they did when they were living, and their minds create illusions that keep them from realizing their true state. Other times, they wander around aimlessly, unsure of what to do or where they are. Mediums can try to help Shades understand the fact that they are dead, but it can be extremely difficult and dangerous if not done with care and caution. Once a Shade realizes they are dead, they are considered a Specter.
III. Abstracts
Basically the “everything else” category. Demons, doppelgangers, poltergeists, etcetera. The character profile of an Abstract is completely different from that of a ghost or a living person. They’re not listed under either because they aren’t necessarily alive or dead.
If the type of Abstract you were looking for isn’t listed below, don’t be discouraged! We want you to take charge and speak to a moderator about your idea so that they can review it and ultimately add it to the list. Abstracts are only completely visible to experienced Mediums; they can appear to Seers and inexperienced Mediums but it’s usually as some sort of blur or just a presence of some sort.
Other than that, the rest of the character is pretty much up to the person who is playing them. Do they look like a human, or are they more animalistic? Do they have a soul, and if they have a soul can they feel human emotions like sadness and love? If they don’t have a soul, what is their purpose in the world of the living? And if they don’t have a purpose, what do they do in the world of the living? The questions are endless, answer as many as you can think of!
Please note that getting an Abstract approved is more difficult than any other type of character. Because they are so customizable, it can be easy to powerplay a demon that has mysterious mind control powers, so mods have to take special care to set up limits so someone can’t just go buckwild and claim that since it was approved, it must be alright. If you set up your own boundaries for your Abstract when you first submit your profile, you’ll probably get approved much faster ; )
a) Demons:
Please note that a demon is not necessarily a devilish creature with red skin, horns, and a tail. They are considered demons because they were never alive to begin with.
b) Doppelgangers:
A doppelganger is an entity that is an exact copy, or unexplained identical twin, of someone who is still alive. It’s been said that seeing your doppelganger will kill you as soon as eye contact is made, or that it is an omen of something horrible to come. It’s up to you to decide why your character exists. Do they only look like a single person, or can they change their form and mimic other people? It’s all up to you!
If you have a friend that wants to play the living person that the doppelganger imitates, it can make for some really interesting roleplay scenes. At the same time, it could be really cool if a doppelganger knew that it was imitating someone in the world somewhere but they never knew when or if they would ever actually see them. Spooky.
c) Poltergeists:
Entities that usually just cause mayhem and chaos wherever they go. They knock things down, move belongings around, and generally fuck shit up. However, on this forum, a poltergeist is not simply someone who has died and become a ghost and just likes to ruin things. They’d be one of the dead types. A poltergeist has to be something that isn’t human; it can have a soul, but its characteristics shouldn’t be that of a human. How it looks, acts, and thinks, is up to you. See Rules of Roleplay.
d) Guardians and Guides:
They’re listed in the same bullet because they are very similar. Both Guardians and Guides are beings who “help” a living character spiritually. Guardians can exist in the physical world and the spiritual world, whereas Guides only exist in the spiritual world and can only be reached through activities like meditation, dreaming, etc. Both beings were once living Mediums, but they’re considered Abstracts because they have already moved on to the next world, though they aren’t allowed to describe it much to their human.
They can be malevolent or benign; for example, a malevolent Guardian could watch over a serial killer and give them comfort and guidance, even though others might consider it evil. The Guardian or Guide is always a benefit to the person who is being watched over. Whether they were given someone to watch over or if they found them themselves is up to the creator of the character, but the person they are watching over has to give consent.
